Gujarmal Modi: The Resolute Industrialist – a Book that celebrates the Modi Family Legacy

Gujarmal Modi: The Resolute Industrialist‘, is the first book of a series titled ‘Entrepreneurs Who Built India’. Published by Harper Collins India and authored by Sonu Bhasin, the book was recently released in March 2022. Bhasin, in her book ‘Gujarmal Modi: The Resolute Industrialist’ writes about Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi, an ambitious young man and who rose to prominence as one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs till date. She gives a vivid account of Gujarmal Modi who made it to the top of the field of industry and created the historic legacy of ‘The Modi Family’ which continues to be celebrated as one of India’s oldest business families.

Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi

The book ‘Gujarmal Modi: The Resolute Industrialist’ traces the journey of Global Thought Leader, Dr. M’s father Gujarmal Modi, who in the year 1932 had been banished from the princely state of Patiala for refusing a glass of wine, served at a celebratory party hosted by the Maharaja of Patiala. Gujarmal Modi, a teetotaller left Patiala with a meagre Rs. 300 in his pocket and made his way to Delhi. He started his life as an entrepreneur by establishing Modi Sugar Mills in Begumbad on the edge of Delhi, marking the beginning of the Modi Empire. Commenting on the transformation of Gujarmal Modi to Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi – an industrialist and a Padmashree awardee, author Sonu Bhasin said, “He dreamt of building an industrial town. And he achieved his dream in merely thirteen years. His story is both interesting and inspiring and will help the managers and entrepreneurs of today realise that obstacles are just bumps on the path to success.”

The story of Shri Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi exemplifies the dramatic changes that India had witnessed as it transitioned from a British colony to an independent nation and from then on an industrial economy. From the stories of rabid racism that saw Gujarmal Modi being called a “dirty Indian” by an Englishman in pre-independence India or from setting up some of the best factories in independent India to being coerced to follow government diktat and witness the transition to the socialist state – Gujarmal Modi saw it all.

Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi’s legacy is continued today by his son, Dr. M who has carried forward his father’s futuristic vision and determination to succeed. The “Modi” name acquired a global recognition through the efforts and vision of Dr. M who has come to be known as the ‘JV king of India’ and a ‘Man of Many firsts’ for ushering in revolutions in digital India, office automation and mobility that have transformed India as we know it. The penchant for building townships that perpetuate the Modi name continues across generations. Like his father before him, Dr. M, has also set up Modipur – a township in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh that was home to the Modi Xerox factory – one of the pioneering international joint ventures of a developing India. Today Modipur, Rampur is envisioned as a private smart city complete with the latest wellness living facilities and enabled by technology.

Both, Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi and Dr. M have played a key role in enabling and advancing India’s development. The contributions by Shri Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi are remembered even today by stalwarts. Commenting on the book by Sonu Bhasin, Harsh Goenka, chairman at RPG Enterprises, said the book highlights the story of a “true legend”.  “Gujarmalji was a towering personality. He was instrumental in making Modinagar the capital of India’s industrial map and it remains a testimony to an era when a giant of a man full of spirit and gumption walked the earth. A true hero!
