Dr. M’s business ventures have been a mirror to his personality – bold, futuristic and international. Accredited with ‘many firsts’ that contributed to the Indian business ecosystem, Dr. M’s Smart (erstwhile: Spice) Group was one of the first to put India on the map as an investment destination for international business giants.
Starting in 1983 with Modi-Xerox which pioneered the office automation industry in India, Dr. M laid the foundation for his business empire by setting up Graphics India which became the sole distributor of Rank Xerox copiers in India and formed Modi Xerox as a joint-venture between the US-based Xerox Corporation & Modi Corp.
Modi-Telstra spurred the era of personal mobility with the first mobile call in the country in 1993. Headlining the front page of every newspaper was the iconic call that Jyoti Basu (Chief Minister of Kolkata) made to Sukh Ram, the then Union communications minister of India in August 1995. Almost three decades later, the mobile phone has become a basic necessity and a symbol of individual empowerment in India.
Dr. M has successfully executed multiple JV partnerships for almost four decades of business operations, earning him the epithet of being the ‘JV King of India’. Collaborating with globally recognised and trusted technological partners to provide a better quality of life for the consumer. These include alliances with category leaders like Alcatel, Olivetti, Axiata, KKR, Fountain Life, American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and Global Wellness Institute amongst others.
